Puri Jagannath Temple: Servitors Urge Dress Code

The servitors of the Jagannath Temple, who embarked on the Anubhav Yatra, visiting various renowned religious destinations, are now proposing the implementation of comparable dress code guidelines within their own temple premises.

Servitors at Puri's Jagannath Temple are urging for the introduction of a dress code for devotees who come to visit this sacred place.

This request aligns with the dress code policies already in place at several other renowned religious institutions.

These temple attendants, who embarked on the Anubhav Yatra, visiting numerous famous religious sites, are now advocating for similar dress code regulations to be enforced within their own temple premises.

In various religious sites across South, North, and West India, visitors are required to adhere to specific dress norms when entering the temples. Women are expected to don traditional saris, while girls wear Salwar suits. Even young individuals are discouraged from wearing shorts when entering the temple.

The servitors argue that such traditional attire is instrumental in preserving the spiritual ambiance and sanctity of the Jagannath Temple.

Notable statements

Chief Administrator of the Jagannath Temple, Rajnan Kumar Das, stated, “We appeal to all devotees to arrive in traditional attire. Although there are dress codes in famous religious sites, we believe that devotees should come appropriately dressed.

Senior Servitor Binayak Dasmohapatra said, “Among the Char Dham, Puri Jagannath Dham is a significant religious site. Thousands of devotees visit Puri for the darshan of Lord Jagannath. Therefore, implementing a dress code for all devotees is essential to uphold the temple’s spirituality and sanctity.

Conclusion

The administration of the Jagannath Temple is preparing to deliberate on the suggested dress code. Various perspectives within the temple administration will be taken into account before arriving at a decision. Subsequently, it is probable that a request for devotees to adhere to traditional attire will be issued.

Importantly, while a dress code for the temple's attendants has not been put into effect, the idea of implementing one for devotees is currently a subject of ongoing discussion. The method and the likelihood of its successful implementation are currently being assessed.
