जब भगवान विष्णु ने कृष्ण के रूप में अवतार लिया, तो उनकी लीला में भाग लेने के लिए देवी-देवताओं ने भी ग्वाल-गोपियों के रूप में अवतार लिया।
कामधेनु नामक गाय ने भी कृष्ण की सेवा करने का विचार किया और अपने अंश से बहुला नामक गाय का रूप धारण कर नंद बाबा की गौशाला में आ गई।
भगवान कृष्ण को बहुला गाय से बहुत स्नेह था। एक बार श्री कृष्ण के मन में बहुला की परीक्षा लेने का विचार आया। जब बहुला वन में चर रही थी, तब भगवान सिंह के रूप में प्रकट हुए।
मृत्यु के रूप में अपने सामने खड़े सिंह को देखकर बहुला भयभीत हो गई।
लेकिन साहस जुटाकर उसने सिंह से कहा, 'हे वनराज, मेरा बछड़ा भूखा है। बछड़े को भोजन कराने के बाद मैं आपका भोजन बनने के लिए वापस आऊंगी।'
सिंह ने कहा कि जो भोजन मेरे सामने आया है, उसे मैं कैसे छोड़ सकता हूं, यदि आप वापस नहीं आएंगे, तो मैं भूखा ही रह जाऊंगा।
बहुला ने सत्य और धर्म की शपथ ली और कहा कि मैं वापस जरूर आऊंगी।
बहुला की शपथ से प्रभावित होकर सिंह बने श्री कृष्ण ने बहुला को जाने दिया। बहुला अपने बछड़े को दूध पिलाकर वापस वन में आ गई।
बहुला की सत्यनिष्ठा देखकर श्री कृष्ण बहुत प्रसन्न हुए और अपने वास्तविक रूप में आकर बोले, 'हे बहुला, तुम परीक्षा में सफल हो गई हो।
अब से भाद्रपद चतुर्थी के दिन तुम्हारी पूजा गौ-माता के रूप में की जाएगी। जो तुम्हारी पूजा करेगा उसे धन और संतान का सुख प्राप्त होगा।
Bahula Chauth Story
When Lord Vishnu incarnated as Krishna, the Gods and Goddesses also incarnated as cowherds and gopis to participate in his leela.
A cow named Kamdhenu also thought of serving Krishna and came to Nand Baba's cowshed in the form of a cow named Bahula from its own part.
Lord Krishna had great affection for the cow Bahula. Once, the thought of testing Bahula came to Shri Krishna's mind. When Bahula was grazing in the forest, the Lord appeared in the form of a lion.
Bahula became frightened on seeing the lion standing in front of her as death.
But gathering courage, she said to the lion, 'O forest king, my calf is hungry. After feeding the calf, I will come back to become your food.'
The lion said that how can I let go of the food that has come in front of me, if you do not come back, I will remain hungry.
Bahula took an oath of truth and religion and said that I will definitely come back. Impressed by Bahula's oath, Shri Krishna, who had become a lion, let Bahula go. Bahula came back to the forest after feeding milk to her calf.
Seeing Bahula's truthfulness, Shri Krishna was very pleased and came in his real form and said, 'O Bahula, you have passed the test.
From now on, on the day of Bhadrapad Chaturthi, you will be worshipped as Gau-Mata. The one who worships you will get the happiness of wealth and children.'
