Yamraj and Yamuna were born from the womb of Chhaya, the wife of Sun God.
Yamuna used to request her brother Yamraj to come to her house and have food. But Yamraj used to postpone Yamuna's request due to being busy.
On Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, Yamuna was very happy to see Yamraj suddenly standing at her door. Pleased, they welcomed their brother and fed him.
Pleased with this, Yamraj asked his sister to ask for a boon.
Then sister Yamuna told her brother that she would come to his place every year on this day to have food and the sister who would apply tilak to her brother and feed him food on this day would not have to fear Yamraj.
Yamraj said 'Tathastu' and left for Yampuri.
That is why such a belief became popular that the brothers who would take a bath in Yamuna on this day and accept the hospitality of their sisters with full devotion, they and their sisters would not have to fear Yamraj.
It is said that the brothers and sisters who take a bath in Yamuna on this day and perform this ritual, Yamraj does not give them the torture of Yamlok.
On this day, the god of death Yamraj and his sister Yamuna are worshipped.
On the day of Bhai Dooj, feeding paan to the brother after the meal is considered very important. It is believed that by feeding paan, the good fortune of the sisters remains intact.
