एक समय की बात है, राजा महल में अपने परिवार के साथ सुखपूर्वक निवास किया करता था। उसका एक पुत्र था, जिसकी शादी हो चुकी थी।
राजा की पुत्रवधू ने एक दिन रसोई में मिठाई रखी हुई देखी तो वह सारी मिठाई खा गई। जब उससे पूछा गया कि सारी मिठाई कहां गई तो उसने कहा, सारी मिठाई तो चूहे खा गए।
पुत्रवधू की यह बात चूहों ने सुन ली और वे इस गलत आरोप को सुनकर अत्यंत क्रोधित हुए। इसके बाद उन्होंने राजा की बहू को सबक सिखाने का निश्चय कर लिया।
कुछ दिनों के बाद महल में कुछ मेहमान आए, चूहों ने सोचा कि यह अच्छा मौका है, राजा की पुत्रवधू को सबक सिखाने का।
बदला लेने के लिए, चूहों ने बहू की साड़ी चुराई और उसे जाकर अतिथि के कमरे में रख दी।
जब सुबह सेवकों और अन्य लोगों ने उस साड़ी को वहां पर देखा, तो लोग राजा की बहू के चरित्र के बारे में बात करने लगे।
यह बात जंगल में आग की तरह पूरे गांव में फैल गई। जब यह बात राजा के कानों तक पहुंची तो उसने अपनी पुत्रवधू के चरित्र पर शक करते हुए, उसे महल से निकाल दिया।
राजा की बहू महल से निकलकर एक झोपड़ी में रहने लगी और नियमित रूप से पीपल के एक वृक्ष के नीचे दीपक जलाने लगी। इसके साथ ही वह पूजा करके, गुड़धानी का भोग लगाकर, लोगों में प्रसाद वितरित करने लगी।
इस प्रकार कुछ दिन बीत जाने के बाद, एक दिन राजा उस पीपल के पेड़ के पास से गुज़रे, जहां उनकी बहू हमेशा दीपक जलाया करती थी। इस दौरान उनका ध्यान उस पेड़ के आस-पास जगमगाती रोशनी पर गया। राजा इसे देखकर चकित रह गए।
महल में वापस आने के बाद उन्होंने अपने सैनिकों से उस रोशनी के रहस्य का पता लगाने के लिए कहा। सैनिक राजा की बात मानकर उस पेड़ के पास चले गए, वहां पर उन्होंने देखा कि दीपक आपस में बात कर रहे थे।
सभी दीपक अपनी-अपनी कहानी बता रहे थे, तभी एक दीपक बोला, मैं राजा के महल से हूं। महल से निकाले जाने के बाद, राजा की पुत्रवधू रोज मेरी पूजा करती है और मुझे प्रज्वलित करती है।
सभी अन्य दीपकों ने उससे पूछा कि राजा की बहू को महल से क्यों निकाला गया, तो उसने बताया कि, एक दिन उसने मिठाई खाकर चूहों का झूठा नाम लगा दिया।
इस पर चूहे नाराज हो गए और राजा की बहू से बदला लेने के लिए उसकी साड़ी अतिथि के कमरे में रख आए। यह सब देखकर राजा ने उन्हें महल से निकाल दिया।
यह सब सुनकर सैनिक भी हैरान रह गए और महल वापिस आकर उन्होंने राजा को पूरी कहानी सुनाई। यह सुनकर राजा को अपनी गलती का एहसास हुआ और उसने अपनी पुत्रवधू को महल में वापस बुला लिया।
इस प्रकार पीपल के पेड़ की नियमित पूजा करने का फल राजा की बहू को मिला और वह अपना जीवन आराम से व्यतीत करने लगी।

Once upon a time, the king lived happily with his family in the palace. He had a son who was married.
One day, the king's daughter-in-law saw sweets kept in the kitchen and ate them all. When she was asked where all the sweets went, she said that the rats ate them all.
The rats heard this and were extremely angry at this false accusation. They decided to teach the king's daughter-in-law a lesson.
After a few days, some guests came to the palace. The rats thought that this was a good opportunity to teach the king's daughter-in-law a lesson.
To take revenge, the rats stole the daughter-in-law's sari and kept it in the guest room. When the servants and other people saw the sari there in the morning, people started talking about the character of the king's daughter-in-law.
This news spread throughout the village like wildfire. When this news reached the king's ears, he doubted his daughter-in-law's character and expelled her from the palace.
The king's daughter-in-law left the palace and started living in a hut and started lighting a lamp under a Peepal tree regularly. Along with this, she started worshiping, offering jaggery and distributing prasad among the people.
Thus, after a few days passed, one day the king passed by that Peepal tree, where his daughter-in-law always lit the lamp. During this, his attention went to the light shining around that tree. The king was astonished to see this.
After returning to the palace, he asked his soldiers to find out the secret of that light. The soldiers obeyed the king and went to that tree, there they saw that the lamps were talking to each other.
All the lamps were telling their own stories, then one lamp said, I am from the king's palace. After being expelled from the palace, the king's daughter-in-law worships me every day and lights me.
All the other Deepaks asked him why the king's daughter-in-law was thrown out of the palace, he told that one day she ate sweets and falsely named the rats.
The rats got angry at this and to take revenge on the king's daughter-in-law, they kept her saree in the guest room. Seeing all this, the king threw them out of the palace.
The soldiers were also surprised to hear all this and coming back to the palace, they told the whole story to the king. Hearing this, the king realized his mistake and called his daughter-in-law back to the palace.
Thus, the king's daughter-in-law got the fruits of regularly worshipping the Peepal tree and she started living her life comfortably.
