Story behind Om krishnaya vasudevaya haraye paramatmane mantra
Jarasandha (जरासंध) was the father-in-law of Lord Krishna's maternal uncle Kansa. His father's name was Brihadrath. Jarasandha was the emperor of Magadha, the most powerful state of India.
It is said that Jarasandha had imprisoned 20,800 kings with his might. It is also popular about Jarasandha that to become the emperor of the world, he wanted to capture kings and sacrifice them on a particular day.
It is said that all the kings had called Lord Shri Krishna by reciting this mantra.
(कहते हैं कि सभी राजाओं ने इस मंत्र का उचारण कर भगवान श्री कृष्ण को पुकारा था)
It was almost impossible to kill Jarasandha. He was fond of wrestling. He was the enemy of Lord Krishna. Shri Krishna made a plan to kill him.
According to the plan, Shri Krishna reached Jarasandha in the guise of Bhima and Arjun and started challenging him for wrestling. Although Jarasandha recognized everyone.
But still he decided to wrestle. The war between Bhima and Jarasandha continued for 13 days. In these 13 days, Bhima cut Jarasandha into two pieces several times. But Jarasandh would unite and get ready for the war every time.
Then on the 14th day, Lord Krishna gave a signal to Bhima to break a straw in the middle and throw both its parts in opposite directions.
Bhima understood the signal of Shri Krishna and he tore Jarasandh in the middle and threw one part of it in the direction of the other part and the other part in the direction of the first part.
This is how Jarasandh was killed. Due to being thrown in opposite directions, both the pieces could not unite.
After Jarasandh was killed, Shri Krishna freed all the kings from his captivity and said that King Yudhishthir wants to perform Rajsuya Yajna to attain the position of Chakravarti and you people should help him.
The kings accepted Shri Krishna's words and everyone accepted Yudhishthir as their king. In the end, Jarasandh's son Sahadev was given a safe passage and made the king of Magadha.
