Shakambhari Navratri also known as Banda Ekadashi is an iconic festival dedicated to the Shakambhari avatar of Goddess Durga, who is the symbol of nourishment and health. It is celebrated in the month of Paush of the Hindu lunar calendar. It is also known as Paush Gupt Navratri. Fasting is observed in the honour of Goddess Shakambhari in this festival celebrated from Paush Shukla Ashtami to Paush Purnima.

Why is Shakambhari Navratri celebrated?

It is believed that in the Murti Rahasya of Durga Saptashati, the colour of Mata Shakambhari is described as blue. The eyes of the mother are like blue lotus and she sits on a lotus flower. The mother holds a lotus flower in one fist and arrows in the other fist.

Legend has it that during a severe drought and famine, Goddess Durga incarnated as Shakambhari to alleviate the suffering. She provided sustenance and comfort, earning her the status of a goddess associated with health and nourishment.
