Ahoi ashtami vrat katha in english - The story of a mother and her seven sons

Once upon a time, a kind and religious woman lived in a village near a dense forest. She had seven sons. It was the month of Kartik and the festival of Diwali was about to come. So before the Diwali festival, the woman decided to whitewash and decorate the house. To whitewash her house, she went to the forest to get soil. In the forest, the woman's eyes fell on a mound of soil.

She took a spade and started digging out soil from that mound. While she was digging out the soil with the help of a spade, suddenly her eyes fell on the blood on the spade and as soon as she removed the soil, she saw that some babies of the thorny mouse were lying covered in blood.

Within a few moments, all the cubs died. Seeing this scene, she returned home without taking the soil, terrified. The woman was extremely distressed about the accident that happened to those innocent cubs and was considering herself guilty and responsible for it.

Meanwhile, after some time, the mongoose came to her den and on finding her babies dead, she started wailing in many ways and in anger, she cursed that, "Whoever has killed my innocent babies, should also suffer great pain and separation from children like me".

So, due to the effect of the curse of the mongoose, within a period of one year from this incident, all the seven sons of that woman went somewhere and never returned. When no information was received about those seven sons, the villagers finally considered all the sons dead.

The villagers assumed that some wild animals of the forest must have killed the sons of that woman or a group of robbers must have killed them for the greed of money. The woman was very distressed and thought to herself that it was because of her killing the cubs of the sehi that this great crisis had come in her life.

A time came when the mother of those seven sons also got tired of waiting for her sons to return and as there was no ray of hope, she decided to end her life. She was going towards the river when she met another old woman of the village on the way.

When the old woman asked the reason for crying like this, the woman told her her pain and sorrow. She narrated the entire incident in detail and also made the old woman aware of her sin of accidentally killing the cubs of the sehi.

The old woman suggested that as a penance for her sin, she should draw a picture of the sehi on the wall and worship Goddess Ahoi Bhagwati. The old woman said, "Daughter! If you observe the fast and worship the Goddess with full rituals, serve the cows and do not think of harming anyone even in your dreams, then by the grace of Goddess Maa you will definitely get your children back."

Goddess Ahoi is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. Goddess Ahoi is considered to be the protector of the children of all living beings, so the old woman suggested that the woman keep a fast and worship Goddess Ahoi.

The woman decided to worship Goddess Ahoi on the day of Ashtami. When the day of Ashtami came, the woman drew a picture of the face of the sehi and worshipped Ahoi Mata while observing the fast.

The woman repented for her sin with a pure heart. Pleased with the devotion and purity of the woman, Goddess Ahoi appeared before her and blessed her with a long life for her sons. Soon all her seven sons returned home alive and well.

From that day onwards, the practice of worshipping Goddess Ahoi Bhagwati on Kartik Krishna Ashtami every year started. On this day, mothers pray and fast for the happiness of their children and receive the blessings of Ahoi Mata.
