एक बार भगवान कृष्ण की लीलाओं में भाग लेने के लिए सभी देवी-देवताओं ने गोप-गोपियों का रूप धारण किया था।
कामधेनु नाम की गाय ने भी भगवान कृष्ण की सेवा करने का विचार किया।
वह अपने अंश से बहुला नाम की गाय बनकर नंद बाबा की गौशाला में पहुंच गई।
भगवान कृष्ण को बहुला गाय से प्रेम हो गया। एक बार उनके मन में विचार आया कि उन्हें बहुला गाय की परीक्षा लेनी चाहिए।
जब बहुला चारा खाने के लिए जंगल में गई, तब भगवान वहां सिंह के रूप में प्रकट हुए। उन्हें देखकर बहुला बहुत डर गई।
लेकिन, उसने साहस जुटाया और सिंह से कहा, हे वनराज, मेरा बछड़ा भूखा है।
बछड़े को भोजन कराने के बाद मैं आपका भोजन बनने के लिए वापस आऊंगी।
इस पर सिंह ने कहा कि जो भोजन मेरे सामने है, उसे मैं कैसे छोड़ सकता हूं।
यदि आप वापस नहीं आए, तो मैं भूख से मर जाऊंगा। बहुला ने सत्य और धर्म की शपथ ली और कहा कि मैं वापस जरूर आऊंगी।
बहुला की शपथ से प्रसन्न होकर भगवान कृष्ण ने, जो सिंह बने हुए थे, उसे जाने दिया।
इसके बाद बहुला अपने बछड़े के पास गई और उसे दूध पिलाकर वापस आ गई।
बहुला की भक्ति देखकर भगवान कृष्ण बहुत प्रसन्न हुए और वे अपने वास्तविक रूप में आ गए और कहा, "हे बहुला, तुम परीक्षा में सफल हो गई हो।
अब से भाद्रपद चतुर्थी के दिन तुम्हारी पूजा गौ माता के रूप में की जाएगी। जो लोग तुम्हारी पूजा करेंगे उन्हें धन और संतान की प्राप्ति होगी।"

When Bahula went to the forest to eat fodder, then God appeared there in the form of a lion. Seeing him, Bahula got very scared.
But, she gathered courage and said to the lion, O Vanraj, my calf is hungry.
After feeding the calf, I will come back to become your food.
On this the lion said that how can I leave the food that is in front of me.
If you do not come back, I will die of hunger. Bahula took an oath of truth and religion and said that I will definitely come back.
Pleased by Bahula's oath, Lord Krishna, who was in the form of a lion, let her go.
After this Bahula went to her calf and came back after feeding it milk.
Lord Krishna was very pleased to see Bahula's devotion and he came back in his real form and said, "O Bahula, you have passed the test.
From now on, on the day of Bhadrapada Chaturthi, you will be worshipped as Gau Mata. Those who worship you will get wealth and children."
