संतान सप्तमी व्रत कथा ( Santan saptami vrat katha) पुत्र प्राप्ति और संतान की रक्षा के लिए सुनी जाती है। माताएं, संतान सप्तमी का व्रत रखती हैं, जो बच्चों की दीर्घायु के लिए विशेष माना जाता है।

कथा के अनुसार प्राचीन काल में अयोध्यापुरी में नहुष नामक एक पराक्रमी राजा था। उस राजा की पत्नी का नाम चंद्रमुखी था।
उसके राज्य में विष्णुदत्त नामक एक ब्राह्मण रहता था, जिसकी पत्नी का नाम रूपवती था।
रानी चंद्रमुखी और रूपवती एक-दूसरे से बहुत प्रेम करती थीं। एक दिन वे दोनों सरयू में स्नान करने गईं। जहां अन्य स्त्रियां भी स्नान कर रही थीं।
उन स्त्रियों ने वहां पार्वती-शिव की मूर्तियां बनाईं और विधि-विधान से उनकी पूजा की।
तब रानी चंद्रमुखी और रूपवती ने उन स्त्रियों से पूजा का नाम और विधि पूछी। तब एक स्त्री ने बताया कि यह संतान प्राप्ति के लिए व्रत है।
इस व्रत के बारे में सुनकर रानी चंद्रमुखी और रूपवती ने भी इस व्रत को करने का संकल्प लिया और भगवान शिव के नाम का धागा बांधा। ले
किन घर पहुंचकर वे अपना संकल्प भूल गईं। जिसके कारण मृत्यु के बाद रानी ने बंदर की योनि में और ब्राह्मणी ने मुर्गी की योनि में जन्म लिया।
कुछ समय बाद दोनों पशु योनि से निकलकर पुनः मनुष्य योनि में आ गईं। चन्द्रमुखी मथुरा के राजा पृथ्वीनाथ की रानी बनी तथा रूपवती ने पुनः ब्राह्मण के घर जन्म लिया।
इस जन्म में रानी ईश्वरी के नाम से तथा ब्राह्मणी भूषणा के नाम से जानी गई।
भूषणा का विवाह राजपुरोहित अग्निमुखी से हुआ। इस जन्म में भी उन दोनों में प्रेम हो गया।
पूर्वजन्म में व्रत भूल जाने के कारण रानी को इस जन्म में भी कोई संतान नहीं हुई।
जबकि भूषणा को अभी भी व्रत याद था। जिसके प्रभाव से भूषणा ने आठ सुन्दर एवं स्वस्थ पुत्रों को जन्म दिया। एक दिन संतान न होने से दुखी रानी ईश्वरी से मिलने गई।
इस पर रानी भूषणा से ईर्ष्या करने लगी तथा भूषणा के बच्चों को मारने का प्रयास करने लगी। परन्तु वह बच्चों को तनिक भी हानि नहीं पहुंचा सकी।
इस पर उसने भूषणा को बुलाकर सारी बात बताई तथा फिर क्षमा मांगते हुए पूछा कि उसके बच्चे क्यों नहीं मरे।
भूषणा ने उसे अपने पूर्वजन्म की बात याद दिलाई तथा यह भी कहा कि उस व्रत के प्रभाव से वह चाहकर भी उसके पुत्रों को नहीं मार सकती।
भूषणा से सारी बातें जानने के बाद रानी ईश्वरी ने भी संतान सुख देने वाले इस व्रत को किया। तब इस व्रत के प्रभाव से रानी गर्भवती हुई और उसने एक सुंदर बालक को जन्म दिया।
तब से यह व्रत पुत्र प्राप्ति के साथ-साथ संतान की रक्षा के लिए भी माना जाता है।

According to the story, in ancient times there was a mighty king named Nahush in Ayodhyapuri. The name of that king's wife was Chandramukhi.
A Brahmin named Vishnudatta lived in his kingdom, whose wife's name was Roopvati.
Queen Chandramukhi and Roopvati loved each other very much. One day they both went to take a bath in Saryu. Where other women were also taking a bath.
Those women made idols of Parvati-Shiva there and worshipped them with rituals.
Then Queen Chandramukhi and Roopvati asked those women the name and method of worship. Then a woman told that this is a fast for getting a child.
Hearing about this fast, Queen Chandramukhi and Roopvati also resolved to observe this fast and tied a thread in the name of Lord Shiva. But
After reaching home, they forgot their resolution. Due to which, after death, the queen was born as a monkey and the Brahmini as a hen.
After some time, both came out of the animal yoni and came back as human. Chandramukhi became the queen of King Prithvinath of Mathura and Roopvati was born again in a Brahmin's house.
In this birth, the queen was known as Ishwari and the Brahmini as Bhushana.
Bhushanna was married to the royal priest Agnimukhi. Both of them fell in love in this birth as well.
Due to forgetting the fast in the previous birth, the queen did not have any children in this birth as well.
While Bhushana still remembered the fast. Due to which Bhushana gave birth to eight beautiful and healthy sons. One day, the queen, saddened by not having children, went to meet Ishwari.
On this, the queen became jealous of Bhushana and tried to kill Bhushana's children. But she could not harm the children even a bit.
On this, she called Bhushana and told her everything and then apologizing, asked why her children did not die.
Bhushna reminded her of her previous birth and also said that due to the effect of that fast, she cannot kill her sons even if she wants to.
After knowing everything from Bhushana, Queen Ishwari also observed this fast which gives the happiness of children. Then due to the effect of this fast, the queen became pregnant and gave birth to a beautiful child.
Since then, this fast is considered to be for getting a son as well as for protecting the children.
