Step-by-Step Guide to perform Shraddha Ceremony | Pitru paksha puja vidhi
Performing Shraddha is a significant ritual to honor ancestors and seek their blessings. Here's a detailed, guide on how to perform the Shraddha ceremony (Pitru paksha puja vidhi) effectively:
1. Perform Shraddha Between Sunrise and afternoon
Shraddha rituals should be completed during the Shraddha Tithi, preferably between sunrise and afternoon. This is the most auspicious time to perform the ceremony.
2. Cleanse Your Home with Gangajal
Begin by waking up early, taking a bath, and thoroughly cleaning your home. Sprinkle Gangajal (holy water) and cow urine in the house to purify the space before starting the rituals.
3. Meditate on Ancestors
Sit facing south and bend your left leg with your knee on the ground. Prepare a wide copper vessel filled with black sesame seeds, raw cow milk, Gangajal, and water. Using both hands, pour the water into the vessel 11 times with the thumb of your right hand while meditating on your ancestors.
4. Prepare Rangoli and Offer Food
Women should purify themselves and prepare special food for the ancestors. Make a Rangoli in the courtyard to welcome the ancestors. Invite a qualified Brahmin to perform the Shraddha. Wash the feet of the Brahmin with your wife by your side, standing on the right.
5. Offer Kheer and Feed the Brahmin
Offer kheer made from cow's milk to the fire for the ancestors. Before feeding the Brahmin, take out food items for Panchbali—which includes offerings for the cow, dog, crow, deity, and ants—on a leaf.
6. Take a Pledge and Serve the Brahmin
Facing south, take a pledge using Kush, barley, sesame, rice, and water. Feed one or three Brahmins on a plate or leaf, and ensure the food is served with respect and happiness.
7. Donate and Receive Blessings
After the Brahmins finish their meal, donate Dakshina and other items according to your capacity. This may include cows, land, sesame seeds, gold, ghee, clothes, grains, jaggery, silver, and salt (referred to as Mahadaan). After the donation, perform Pradakshina (circumambulation) around the Brahmin four times, seeking their blessings for your household and ancestors.
8. Use White Flowers and Necessary Items for Shraddha
While performing the Shraddha, use only white flowers. Essential items include milk, Gangajal, honey, white clothes, Abhijit Muhurta, and sesame seeds. These elements play a vital role in the Shraddha rituals.
By following these steps, you can perform the Shraddha ceremony properly and honor your ancestors with devotion and reverence.
