Step 1 - Sankalp
The first step in Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Vidhi is to take a Sankalp. All wishes are fulfilled by worshipping with a true heart.
On the day of Ahoi Ashtami, women should take a vow of fasting after bathing and meditation in the morning. During Sankalp, it is also said that the fasting woman will remain without eating or drinking anything and will break the fast by seeing the star or the moon according to her family tradition.

Ahoi ashtami vrat Katha
According to the story of Ahoi Ashtami, a kind woman lived in a village located near a dense forest. She had seven sons. A few days before the festival of Diwali in the month of Kartik, the woman decided to repair and decorate her house.
For this, she decided to go to the forest and bring soil. While digging soil in the forest, the spade with which she was digging accidentally killed a lion cub. She was very sad about what happened to the innocent child.
Within a year of this incident, all the seven sons of the woman disappeared one by one. The villagers searched for them but when they were not found, they considered them dead. The villagers assumed that some wild animal in the forest must have killed her sons.
This made the woman sad and she blamed her son's death for this misfortune. Meanwhile, one day she narrated her grief to an old woman of the village and also told her about the incident of the child's murder. On this the old lady advised the woman that as a penance for her sin she should make the face of a cub and worship Goddess Ahoi Bhagawati, who is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati.
Because she is the protector of the offspring of all living beings. The woman decided to worship Ahoi Mata on the day of Ashtami. When the day of Ashtami came the woman kept a fast by making the face of a cub and worshiped Ahoi Mata.
She repented with all her heart for the sin she had committed. Goddess Ahoi was pleased with her devotion and sincerity and appeared before her and blessed her with the long life of her sons. Soon all her seven sons returned home alive. From that day onwards, it became a custom to worship Mata Ahoi Bhagawati every year on the day of Kartik Krishna Ashtami.
