The secret behind Moraya name is associated with Ganpati Bappa is Moraya Gosavi (who was Lord Ganesh devotee).
It is said that in the 14th century, Moraya Gosavi lived in Chinchwad near Pune. Moraya Gosavi did rigorous Ganesh Sadhana in Chinchwad.
It is said that he took Samadhi here alive. Since then, the Ganesh temple here became famous all over the country and Ganesh devotees started chanting the name of Moraya along with the name of Ganpati.

The Legend of Mayureshwar and Moraya Gosavi
- According to the Ganesha Purana, the Gods/Devas invoked Lord Ganesha to defeat the Demon Sindhu, and Ganesha chose a peacock as his vehicle, taking the form of a six-armed deity.
In Morgaon, Ganesha is worshipped as Mayureshwar, also known as Moreshwar in Marathi.
The story goes that Vamanbhat and Parvati's son, Moraya, was a devotee of Mayureshwar and performed penance in Theur, achieving a state of Siddha.
Moraya Gosavi became a renowned saint, establishing an ashram in Chinchwad, where he performed religious and spiritual activities. He visited the Mayureshwar temple annually on Ganesh Chaturthi and, inspired by Ganesha, installed an idol in his ashram, later taking Samadhi there.
His son, Chintamani, built a temple over his Samadhi, and also contributed to the maintenance of nearby Ganesh temples.

The Birth and Transformation of Morya Gosavi - Another tale
Legend has Morya was born into a Deshastha Brahmin family with the surname Shaligram.
His parents, Bhat Shaligram and his wife, had relocated to Morgaon from Bidar, where they devoutly prayed to Lord Ganesha. Following their prayers, Morya was born.
However, Morya's health took a turn for the worse, and he fell gravely ill.
His parents, desperate for a solution, again turned to Ganesha in prayer. It was then that Nayan Bharati, a revered Gosavi, arrived and administered medicine to Morya, curing his illness.
Nayan Bharati's influence extended beyond mere healing, as he also imparted spiritual wisdom to Morya.
This encounter had a profound impact on the Bhat family, leading them to adopt the surname Gosavi. From then on, Morya was known as Morya Gosavi, marking the beginning of his journey as a devout follower of Lord Ganesha.
