Onam History - The Legend of King Mahabali: A Story of Generosity and Devotion
Onam's roots are deeply entwined with the legend of King Mahabali, a benevolent ruler renowned for his kindness, generosity, and commitment to equality.
His prosperous and peaceful reign sparked concern among the gods, who feared his growing influence.
To balance his power, Lord Vishnu transformed into Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, and requested three paces of land from Mahabali.
The king's generosity led him to agree, and Vamana expanded to cover the earth and sky in two strides. With no room left for the third step, Mahabali offered his head, showcasing his devotion.
Moved by Mahabali's selflessness, Lord Vishnu granted him an annual visit to his kingdom, and Onam celebrates the beloved king's return to Kerala.
