Jitiya Vrat 2023 auspicious time

Ashtami Tithi will start at 06:34 AM on 06 October and end at 08:08 AM on 07 October. This festival lasts for three days. This time this fast will continue from 05 October to 07 October.

The Mythological Tale Behind Jitiya Fast

In a mythological account, it is narrated that Ashwatthama, consumed by anger following his father's demise during the Mahabharata war, harbored a burning desire for revenge. Driven by this relentless vengeance, he infiltrated the Pandavas' camp. Inside, he encountered five individuals who were peacefully sleeping, whom he mistakenly believed to be Pandavas. However, these five individuals were none other than the children of Draupadi.

Tragically, Ashwatthama took their lives, prompting Arjun to apprehend him and confiscate his divine gem. In retaliation, Ashwatthama, seeking vengeance, targeted the unborn child within Uttara, Abhimanyu's wife. In this dire situation, Lord Krishna bestowed the merits of all his virtuous deeds upon Uttara's unborn child, reviving the child within her womb. Due to this remarkable occurrence of being born, dying in the womb, and being brought back to life, the child came to be known as Jeevitputrika.

Since that time, the Jitiya fast has been observed as a way to ensure the long life and auspiciousness of children.
