Raksha Bandhan is a significant festival in Hinduism, honoring the special bond between brothers and sisters.
Raksha Bandhan: A Joyous Celebration of Sibling Bonding
On this auspicious day, sisters tie a sacred thread, known as Rakhi or Raksha Sutra, on their brothers' right wrists, wishing for their long and prosperous lives. In return, brothers pledge to protect and care for their sisters.
Raksha Bandhan Traditional Observances
To mark the occasion, devotees often take a holy bath in rivers like Ganga, Saryu, Narmada, Kaveri, or Kshipra. If a river bath is not possible, they use holy water at home.
Raksha Bandhan Regional Celebrations
Raksha Bandhan is celebrated with unique traditions across various states:
- In West Bengal and Odisha, it's also known as Jhulan Purnima, with grand worship of Lord Krishna and Radharani, accompanied by Rakhi ceremonies.
- In Maharashtra's Koli community, it's celebrated as Narali Purnima or Coconut Day.
- In parts of North India, especially Jammu and Kashmir, kite flying is a popular activity around Janmashtami and Raksha Bandhan.
