Karwa Chauth vrat katha in English

A long time ago, a moneylender had seven sons and a sister named Karva. All the seven brothers loved their sister very much. They would feed her first and then eat themselves. Once their sister had come to her parents' house from her in-laws' house.

In the evening, when the brothers came home after closing their business, they saw that their sister was very sad. All the brothers sat down to eat and started urging their sister to eat too, but the sister told that she is observing a waterless fast of Karva Chauth today and she can eat something only after seeing the moon and offering Arghya to it. Since the moon has not yet risen, she is restless with hunger and thirst.

The youngest brother cannot see his sister's condition and he lights a lamp on a distant Peepal tree and places it under a sieve. From a distance, it seems as if the moon of Chaturthi is rising.

After this, the brother tells his sister that the moon has risen, you can eat food after offering Arghya to it. The sister climbs the stairs in happiness, looks at the moon, offers it arghya and sits down to eat.

When she puts the first piece in her mouth, she sneezes. When she puts the second piece in her mouth, she finds a hair in it and as she tries to put the third piece in her mouth, she gets the news of her husband's death. She gets upset.

Her sister-in-law tells her the truth about why this happened to her. The gods have become angry with her because she broke the fast of Karva Chauth in the wrong way and they have done this.

After knowing the truth, Karva decides that she will not let her husband's last rites be performed and will bring him back to life with her chastity.

She sits near her husband's dead body for a whole year. She takes care of him. She keeps collecting the needle-like grass growing on him.

After a year, the day of Karva Chauth comes again. All her sisters-in-law keep the fast of Karva Chauth. When the Bhabhis come to take her blessings she urges each Bhabhi to 'Take Yam's needle and give Piya's needle, make me a Suhagin like you', but each time the Bhabhi goes away asking her to request the next Bhabhi.

Thus when the sixth Bhabhi comes Karva repeats the same thing to her too. This Bhabhi tells her that since her fast was broken due to the youngest brother, only his wife has the power to bring your husband back to life, so when she comes you should catch hold of her and not let go until she brings your husband back to life. Saying this she goes away.

Finally the youngest Bhabhi comes. Karva urges her to become a Suhagin too, but she starts procrastinating. Seeing this Karva holds her tightly and asks her to bring her husband back to life. The Bhabhi scratches and pulls her, but Karva does not let her go.

Finally seeing her penance the Bhabhi is moved and cuts her little finger and puts Amrit from it in her husband's mouth. Karva's husband immediately sits up saying Shri Ganesh-Shri Ganesh. Thus, by the grace of God, Karva gets her husband back through her younger sister-in-law.

O Shri Ganesh-Mata Gauri, just as Karva has received the blessing of being a married woman from you, may all married women receive the same.
